What is Moonstone?

Moonstone is a shiny version of Orthoclase. Orthoclase is a part of the Feldspar family. Other famous Feldspars are Amazonite, Sunstone, and Labradorite.

Moonstone comes in a variety of colors from silvery black to a glowing white. It has a distinguishing lunar sheen dancing upon the surface. This is also known as 'adularescence', a floating moon effect.

What Color is Moonstone?

Moonstone comes in a variety of colors. It can be clear, translucent, or opaque. Depending on what kind of healing you are looking for, different hues of Moonstone may be best for you.

Here are the Moonstone colors you can find in the gem industry today:

black moonstone sphere

Black Moonstone varies from a light silvery gray to a dark charcoal color. This tone of Moonstone is rarer than the others. You will usually see lighter bands within the stone.

pink moonstone spherePink Moonstone varies from a light rosy color to a deep salmon. It will usually have veins and inclusions.

rainbow moonstone sphere

Rainbow Moonstone is the most coveted version of the gemstone for its brilliant flashes of sheen. Within the white stone, you will see iridescent colors ranging from blues to greens, to yellows.

moonstone tourmaline sphere

Moonstone Tourmaline is a white or Rainbow Moonstone with Black Tourmaline inclusions. Growing together in harmony, this black and white contrast makes an excellent balancing stone.

What chakra is Moonstone?

Moonstone is most popularly associated with your Solar Plexus chakra. Here it calms your emotions and fills your aura with a comforting breath.

Use Moonstone at your Sacral chakra to balance your sexual energies. It is especially useful for the feminine reproductive center and feminine health.

You can also use Moonstone crystals at your Third Eye chakra if you are doing intuitive work to connect with your Higher Self.

How do you use Moonstone crystals?

Whether you are using the stone for healing or decoration, this intuitive gemstone is ready to infuse your life with relaxation.

Here are a few ideas to get you started on your Moonstone journeys.

    • Lie down and place a Rainbow Moonstone at your Third Eye chakra to focus on trusting your intuition.

    • Use Moonstone tumbled stones as a reminder of your manifestation goals. Whenever you are out and about on your daily routine and absently reach for the stone in your pocket or purse, you will be reminded of your goals.

    • Hold a pair of Moonstone spheres, one in each hand, as a replacement to metal stress balls.

    • Place Moonstone crystals in the "New Beginnings and Family" corner of your room according to the Feng Shui Bagua map for your space.

    • Place your Moonstone spheres at the "Health" area of your space to release a calming energy throughout the room.

    • Meditate with Moonstone eggs to access the feminine divine.

    • Wear Moonstone jewelry to empower your self-confidence and keep you protected during your travels.

    • Use Moonstone massage stones to relieve tension and anxiety from your body and replace it with positive vibrations.

    • Place Moonstone pyramids at your bedstand or polished Moonstone under your pillow for a good night's sleep.

    • Bring out your Moonstone crystals whenever there is a lunar event to strengthen your healing powers.

    • Use Moonstone in your Moon rituals and really connect with the astrological happenings; letting go under the Full Moon and manifesting under the New Moon.

    Sheila's personal experience with Moonstone

Like most people, I am mesmerized by Rainbow Moonstone. The flashes are magical. I love to look for the rainbows in my Moonstone piece whenever I am feeling uninspired. The mysterious shine shows me that there's always a glimmer of hope no matter the state of the world.

I was later introduced to Black Moonstone. This is a more rare gemstone, making it automatically more attractive. Plus, being a dark color, it is easy to wear for most people who prefer wearing black clothing!

I also have Moonstone jewelry that I love to wear when I travel. It's one of the popular travel stones to ensure a pleasant journey.

    Divination with Moonstone

Drawing Moonstone in a gemstone divination session means: You need self-care. Stop your daily grind, even just for two minutes. Close your eyes, breathe deep, hold on tight to your Moonstone, and relax.

    Magical Incantation of Moonstone

This is a message from Moonstone from Doreen Virtue and Judith Lukomski's book "Crystal Therapy":

"I am a talisman for women with my ever-present moon energy that surrounds my friends, enhancing their femininity and beauty. I captivate those who gaze at me, inducing a quiet feeling of sensuality and a calling to soul-mate partnership. Male/female balance is essential, for when you live in coordination of yin and yang principles, the universal flow moves without interruption, allowing consistent support and attracting experiences and people that encourage your purpose and focus. Although I'm an influence with feminine power (nurturer, creator, and lover), all humans can feel and share in these roles; thus my vibration is a tribute to the breadth of your possibilities."

    Lisa's personal experience with Moonstone

Moonstone is one of the crystals I've used actively and consistently over the years. In the beginning of my crystal healing journey, I didn't find any connection to Moonstone at all. It most likely had to do with the fact that most Moonstones come in light pastel colors and I have an attraction to the bolder stones. Yet as I learned more about Moonstone and began to use it, it became an impressive and important part of my daily life.

I first turned to Moonstone for feminine energy. I have always had wild hormones that follow their own rules and a pretty masculine personality. When I decided I should pay attention to my feminine side, I remembered that Moonstone was the crystal to help. I got a special Moonstone necklace that I wore often. I started seeking out Moonstone at gem shows. That's when I learned about brilliant Black Moonstone- one of my favorites! I even started noticing the Moon and studied up on the Supermoon, Blue Moon, and other lunar phenomenon. By the end of it, I was totally hooked.

Now I'm so into Moonstone and the Moon, you can find this crystal mentioned more often than any other stone through our website. This has to do with Moonstone's undeniable connection to the Moon. It is the key player in our New Moon Divinations, Full Moon articles, and our crystal astrology reports too.

Moonstone is as radiant and crucial as the moon above.

How do you care for your Moonstone?

Your Moonstone pieces should be handled with care so they don't chip or break.

Moonstone can be placed under running water or soaked in soapy water.

Beware that if there are natural fractures or veins in the stone, these may be spots of weakness when subjected to water, heat, or chemicals.

Do not keep it near stones harder than 6 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness if you don't want it to get scratched.
