The Hand of a Mother
I never realized how much mothers do until I became a mother myself. A lifetime of globe-trotting, partying, and business entrepreneurship came to a screeching halt after my son was born. Now that he's in preschool, I recaptured a small piece of my lost identity. But I have another badge to add to my collection: motherhood.
Many women adore being mothers. They were born to be mothers. Care and pampering come naturally to them. My mom thought mothering was a pretty easy gig, in fact, she raised four of us. So did my grandmother. Through the hand of my mother, I was fed amazing homemade meals, vacationed all around the globe, and was given the finest opportunities in academics. Then there are other mothers like myself. I feel like a phony in the mothering world, shuffling along on two left legs. It is the hardest job I've ever had to do. And yet I do it because it's the job that pays the most: the love of my son.
Mothers Need a Hand to Hold
A mother's intuition is to hold your hand. Regardless of how old you are or where you are in the world, you are always your mother's child. If you are fortunate enough to have a loving mother still living in this realm, you have the emotional security of knowing that everything will be all right.
My mom is in her 70s now. We are lucky that she is smart and thriving, with a youthful spirit. Whenever I feel hopeless, I wish that my mom were here to take care of me. Heck, I wish my grandmother were here too. This is a feeling I want my son to have, and my motivation to live a long, fruitful life.
