What is Aragonite?
Aragonite is a polymorph of Calcite. That means the two minerals have the exact same chemical composition, CaCO3, but they crystallize differently in different crystal shapes. This happens because of the different conditions during crystal formation. Aragonite forms in crystal needles and Calcite forms in crystal blocks.
Aragonite crystals are found in massive, compact, granular or radially fibrous textures. When found in massive textures, it may be deposited in horizontal layers which is referred to as Mexican Onyx. Mexican Onyx is in fact layered Aragonite or Calcite and you will find it in crystal figurines and carvings. You may also hear it called Onyx Marble, California Onyx or Italian Onyx.
Calcite is the more stable form. When heated to 752 degrees fahrenheit, Aragonite will turn to Calcite. Aragonite is a 3.5-4 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, so it's a little harder than Calcite which is a 3, but both are pretty soft stones.
Lisa's Personal Experience with Aragonite
While living in Hungary, I would attend crystal shows and admire all the wonderful treasures- mostly imported. Hungary doesn't produce a vast array of gemstones, but it does produce a lot of Aragonite.
Hungarian Aragonite comes in interesting spiky raw forms and sticks that caught my eye. I like Aragonite because it is truly an Earthy stone.
My husband took a piece from my Aragonite collection. He sliced it in half and polished it with a makeshift polisher from our Budapest flat. The homemade pair has sold and is long gone, but my newfound appreciation for this humble stone lives on.

What Color is Aragonite?
Aragonite is usually white, but it can also be found in a variety of colors including yellow, brown, green, red, purple, gray or blue. Its colors will depend on other mineral inclusions during its crystallization process. For example, sand inclusions may cause Aragonite to look brown.
