What is Aquamarine?

Aquamarine is the only blue-green crystal of the colorful Beryl mineral family. In our earlier article, we discussed Amazonite as being the only blue-green crystal of the Feldspar family. Similarly, Aquamarine is prized for its standout color.

Another star player in the Beryl family is green Emerald. Where Emerald gets most of its green color from Chromium, Aquamarine gets its blue-green colors from Iron.

Where is Aquamarine Found?

Aquamarine is found mostly in Brazil, the Urals of Russia (although the mines here may be exhausted), Queensland in Australia, Myanmar Burma, China, India, Kenya, Zambia, Colombia, Tanzania, the United States, and many other localities.

Despite its name, Aquamarine is not found in the water. It did form in water, though, so there's a correlation!

What are the healing powers of Aquamarine?

Aquamarine is known for its soothing energies. It is a calming crystal that quiets the mind and reduces stress and fear. Besides its peacefulness, here are some other metaphysical meanings of Aquamarine:

  • Aquamarine helps achieve closure on all levels.

  • This celestial gemstone connects you with guardian angels.

  • Aquamarine's patient energies are perfect for empaths.

  • It helps prioritize your life, so you're not overwhelmed by your large to-do list.

  • Aquamarine is a happiness stone that promotes long-lasting friendships, marriages, and partnerships.

How to use Aquamarine Gemstones

Whether you are looking to use Aquamarine in healing, jewelry, or in the home, here are some ideas to get you started on your gemstone journey:

  • Aquamarine has long been associated with the seas. Wear Aquamarine to keep you safe when you are going for a sail, taking a cruise, or swimming in the ocean.

  • If you are going into a high-stress situation, keep Aquamarine stones in your pocket to use as worry stones and relieve tension.

    • Meditate with Aquamarine spheres for a gentle and supportive vibration into the spiritual realm.

    • Use raw Aquamarine rocks to place around the bed to stabilize your heartbeat and lull you into sleep.

    • Activate Aquamarine stones with a tuning fork to vibrate its energies into the Throat and Heart chakras.

    • Decorate your space with Aquamarine stones to bring tranquil energy to your home, office, and garden.

    • Gift Aquamarine to beloved friends and family, especially those born in March.

    • Wear Aquamarine jewelry when you are about to sing, to access the harmony of the angelic realm.

    • Hold Aquamarine in times of grief. Its nurturing energies will get you through the tough times.

    Does Aquamarine change color?

Aquamarine can vary from light green to deep blue. Earlier, the sea green Aquamarines were most valued, but today the deep blue versions are the most coveted in the gem industry. That is why you will find most Aquamarine on the market today is heat treated to bring out this dark blue and reduce the green color.

Not all rough Aquamarines will heat equally. Depending on the locality and how they formed, some gemstones will heat better than others. Also, some will fade in prolonged direct sunlight after heating and others will stay steadfast.

    How is Aquamarine formed?

Aquamarine is formed in pegmatites, which are rocks formed from cooling magma. As the magma cools, the water that is trapped in the magma does not dissolve. Instead, the water forms cavities within the cooling rock. Within the cavity, minerals like Beryl can form and crystallize as the magma solidifies like a protective barrier around the crystal.

So for Aquamarine to form specifically, there must be Beryl and Iron in this watery solution within the magma. Beryl and Iron fuse to form Aquamarine. If other minerals are present during this crystallization process, you will get a different gemstone altogether.

Aquamarine can be found forming with Biotite, Garnet, Phenakite, and Topaz within its pegmatite womb.

Should an Aquamarine be light or dark?

The translucent, gem quality Aquamarine is found deeper within the earth. The more opaque and crackly Aquamarine is found closer to the earth's surface because it has been more compressed over time.

This process could also be a result of the minerals and the hardness of the soils where the Aquamarine forms. For example, in Brazil and Colorado, many gem-quality Aquamarines were found near the surface of the earth thanks to the softer earth and minerals in the area.

What is the largest Aquamarine gem?

So far, the largest Aquamarine of gemstone quality was found in 1910 in Minas Gerais, Brazil weighing 243 pounds (110.5 kilograms) and measuring 18 x 15.5 inches (48.5 x 42 centimeters). It was cut into many finished gemstones.

The largest cut gemstone was named Dom Pedro Aquamarine and can be seen in the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C.

There have been other larger finds, but they are not considered gem quality.

    Lisa's personal experience with Aquamarine

I am so lucky to be surrounded by crystals all of the time. I don't easily become attached to a specific piece because I enjoy watching new gems come into the shop and go off to their rightful homes. One of the only crystals that I call my own is a large raw Aquamarine gemstone.

My Aquamarine is a rich blue, a superb color and form. It was a gift given to me several years ago by a fellow crystal vendor who noticed my love for the piece.

The healing gemstone sits right in front of my computer monitor, which means that I see it all the time. I pretty much spend half my life in front of the computer. I feel that it calms my otherwise anxious mind, and protects me from electromagnetic pollution.

Another thing I value about the precious gemstone is that it corresponds to my Throat chakra - which I'm constantly working to improve. Communication is a key life lesson that comes back to bite me all the time, and with Aquamarine I'm making good progress with being more fluid and empathetic in my speech and thoughts.

    Sheila's personal experience with Aquamarine

Aquamarine is a very water-related stone. I am a very Earth sign, so water activities don't call to me. My friends and spouse are always excited about beach vacations, but for me, they hold no lure. It does bring me joy to gift Aquamarine, though because most everyone else around me is attracted to its beautiful sea-blue colors.

For Satin Crystals, I make Aquamarine jewelry with icy blue stones and they are popular the world around. I guess everyone can use a little relaxation for their souls while they are toiling away at their 9-5 or dealing with the chaos of their kids!

    What chakra is Aquamarine for?

Aquamarine is associated with the Throat and the Heart chakra. The more blue versions of Aquamarine vibrate with the Throat chakra for eloquent communication. It can also be used at the Third Eye chakra to deepen meditation.

The more green versions of Aquamarine vibrate with the Heart chakra for a patient, loving energy.

What are the mineral facts of Aquamarine?

    • Mohs Scale of Hardness: 7.5-8

    • Surface Color: Green to Blue

    • Streak Color (can vary from surface color, this is the color of the crystals’ powdered minerals): Colorless

    • Group: Silicates (silicon + oxygen)

    • Cleavage (where the crystal breaks off naturally to form a new face, parallel to its structure. This is a clean break and can cleave over and over again along the same face, retaining the crystal's structure): Poor, Indistinct

    • Fracture: Conchoidal (concave, like when glass breaks)

    • Luster: Vitreous (glassy)

    • Transparency: Transparent to Translucent

    • Crystal System: Hexagonal (six-sided)

    • Crystal Habit: Prismatic (two end faces are similar in shape)

    Are Aquamarine stones durable?

Aquamarine is a 7.5-8 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. This makes it a relatively hard stone, up there on the scale with Quartz and Topaz. It does not scratch easily. If you see scratches on the surface, it is probably glass or a softer stone.

    What birthstone is Aquamarine?

Aquamarine is the birthstone for anyone born in March. If you or someone you know is born in March, make sure to have some Aquamarine in your life and see how this gemstone can make you glow.

Aquamarine is also associated with the Zodiac of Pisces and is the traditionally gifted gemstone for the 19th anniversary of marriage.

    Magical Incantation of Aquamarine

This is a message from Aquamarine from Doreen Virtue and Judith Lukomski's book "Crystal Therapy":

"I unite with you to cleanse the environment with dedication and fervor for our shared commitment to keeping the waters of life pristine. Clear your aura with me while synchronizing your physical, emotional, mental, and etheric bodies. I augment composure, leaving hints of fairies at play within your improved humor and disposition. Wear me close to your heart to feel the sea, recalling dolphin dances with innocent childlike delight. Lose your concerns in my ocean of green and blue, releasing fear and anxiety to the Sea Goddesses and replacing your old beliefs with blissful knowingness and trust."

How do you care for your Aquamarine?

Aquamarine is a relatively hard stone, but it is also brittle depending on what veins and crevices are involved in the stone. It can be cleaned with running water. When in doubt, just use a soft cloth.

Keep polished Aquamarine out of harsh chemicals and acidic vinegar to keep their shine. Keep them away from crystals and objects that are harder than a 7.5 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness to avoid scratching.

Is my Aquamarine real or fake?

Luckily, there aren't too many imposter Aquamarines out there because it is not worth the cost of making fakes. However, they are out there.

If you see an advertisement for Brazilian Aquamarine or Nerchinsk Aquamarine, it may be Blue Topaz, a much cheaper stone. If you see Siam Aquamarine, that is a name for heat-treated blue Zircon.

The best way to determine if your Aquamarine is real is to find a reputable seller who knows what they are selling you. If you do not have access to a reputable seller, here are some tips to follow to tell if your Aquamarine is real:

    • Aquamarine should feel cold to the touch like a lot of natural crystals. If it is warm, it may be glass.

    • Aquamarine does not scratch easily, so if it can be scratched by anything less than the hardness of Quartz (which is harder than glass), it is most likely a fake.

    • Aquamarine does not produce bubbles, so if you see these within the stone, it is not the real thing.

    • Aquamarine has a subtle pleochroic effect, meaning that it can look more green, blue, or even clear depending on the angle of light. This effect helps rule out fakes like glass and Spinel. However, because the effect is very weak, you may have trouble seeing it with the naked eye, plus it's best observed in very translucent versions of the stone.

    • Aquamarine also does not show any gray colors, which helps rule out synthetics.

    • Aquamarine will have a colorless or clear streak in the crystal streak test despite its surface color.

These are some simple tests you can do yourself at home. However, if these tests do not determine the nature of your Aquamarine, you’ll need help from a gemologist with more advanced tests. This is especially true if you are trying to distinguish it from Blue Topaz, which is very similar in nature to Aquamarine.

The only way to know for sure if your Aquamarine is real is to send it to a certified gemological laboratory. You can also find more tips on the Crystal Identification Help.

    How do you choose Aquamarine?

As you can imagine, gem quality and opaque Aquamarine stones can vary greatly in price. However, their healing energies remain the same.

If you are someone who enjoys the highly polished look of fine-cut jewelry, you will want very clear gemstones. If you are someone who vibes with the rough and tumble stones straight from the earth, you will want the more opaque stones. Either way, if you are drawn to the blue versions of Aquamarine, keep in mind that most of it is heat-treated.

You can also collect raw pieces of Aquamarine in its green form straight from the Earth. The more blue and more prismatic pieces have a higher price point but these naturally rare gems make stunning decorative pieces in your life.

Can Aquamarine be worn every day?

You can wear Aquamarine every day. It is one of the most durable gemstones on the market. That being said, wear it with care; it's a natural crystal and will wear down with extensive use, environmental factors, and chemicals or sweat from your body.
