What is Labradorite?

Labradorite is a Feldspar mineral just like Moonstone, Amazonite, and Sunstone. It is known for its labradorescence, which is caused by light reflecting off twinning planes within the stone like a maze of circus-house mirrors. This iridescent flash can range in rainbow colors from blues to greens to yellows and everything in between.

Not all Labradorite shows labradorescence, but for crystal healers and gem collectors, these are the most popular.

Sheila's personal experience with Labradorite

Labradorite is one of my favorite crystals. I am intrigued by the labradorescence, the flashier the better. I have Labradorite crystals all over my office and home, turned to best reflect the iridescent sheen.

No matter how many times I pick up my favorite Labradorite crystals, I am always inspired by the colors staring back at me. This inspiration is especially useful when I am feeling lazy. In fact, I wrote a whole blog about Labradorite vs Laziness

To me, Labradorite is steeped in magic. It is a crystallized form of a miracle.

Lisa's personal experience with Labradorite

I love looking at Labradorite that has expansive pools and splashes of Rainbow. Whenever I pick out out a batch of Labradorite palm stones to offer at Satin Crystals, I can't help but keep one or two pieces for myself. The colors in Labradorite are very attractive, and I feel better just gazing into the stone or holding it for its calming divinity. When I encounter a piece with several rainbow colors in one, I feel that it energizes all my chakras simultaneously.

There's a brand new type of Labradorite that I'm totally in love with, and it's called Beyond Labradorite. This very recent 2020 discovery is actually a natural combination stone of Labradorite, Black Tourmaline, and Magnetite. I love it so much because when I want a protective crystal, I don't have to limit myself to one.

I use the Beyond Labradorite ball and gain from the powers of all three super-stones at once. I recommend Beyond Labradorite for those looking to dispel negative vibes and thoughts while keeping their place Feng Shui fresh.

What chakra is Labradorite?

Labradorite is most strongly associated with the Third Eye chakra. It helps you develop your intuition and connection to your Higher Self.

How do you cleanse and charge Labradorite?

When you are first united with your Labradorite crystal, be sure to cleanse and charge it for optimal healing benefits. Most Labradorite pieces can be cleansed under running water, but if you are unsure, make sure to choose a method that is safe for all stones.

Because of its internal crystal layers, Labradorite is sensitive to pressure and can easily crack or chip. Keep it away from crystals that are harder than a 6 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness to avoid scratching.

Labradorite loves to be energetically charged under the New Moon. The energy of Labradorite aligns with the transformational energy of the New Moon.

Can you put Labradorite in water?

Depending on your Labradorite stone, it may be okay to place in water. You don't want to soak any of your Labradorite crystals in water for a prolonged time as the water will get into the veins and fractures and it could disintegrate over time. If you are in doubt, leave it out of water completely.

Does Labradorite fade in the sun?

Like most natural colored stones, Labradorite can fade in the sun over time.

If you keep dark Labradorite in harsh, direct sunlight, you may notice fading. Otherwise, lighter Labradorite pieces in indirect sunlight are not prone to losing color.

What is Spectrolite?

Labradorite with extraordinary labradorescent colors is called Spectrolite. Like the feathers of a peacock, Spectrolite dazzles the eyes with its spectrum of colors. The purple tones of Spectrolite are the most coveted.

Originally named for the high-quality Labradorite coming out of Finland, Spectrolite is now used to refer to any top quality Labradorite.

What is the color of Labradorite?

Labradorite can vary in color from clear to white to gray. It can be colored with red Hematite, black Magnetite, and Ilmenite mineral inclusions.

On top of that, it may show labradorescence, which can include a rainbow of colorful sheen. This iridescence is best seen in natural light.

How is Labradorite formed?

Labradorite is found in many types of rock formations including igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. The dark color of Labradorite is caused by Ilmenite.

Where is Labradorite found?

Labradorite was discovered in 1770 in Labrador, Canada. It can also be found in Finland, Madagascar, Russia, the USA, Australia, Norway, Sri Lanka, and India.

What is Labradorite used for?

Besides crystal healing, Labradorite is also used in architecture, artwork, and jewelry making. You will find this stone in walls, counters, floors, sculptures, altars, columns, gardens. Designers love incorporating Labradorite into their work because of its gleaming flashes.

How can I tell fake Labradorite from real?

If you are not familiar with real Labradorite you could fall for a fake crystal. The best way to educate yourself is to start studying the real thing. If you don't have a source for real Labradorite, look online at trusted websites for photos of actual Labradorite.

Here are some tips to tell if your Labradorite is real or fake:

  • Real Labradorite will most often show natural inclusions, divots, veins, and organic characteristics. These "impurities" are what create the color-play of Labradorite.

  • If your Labradorite has labradorescence, the colors will flash and change as you move the stone. Dyed or fake Labradorites will not do this.

  • You will often see real black veins in Labradorite. If you see veins filled with other colors and splotchy patches, it is most likely dyed.

  • If you see a Red Labradorite on the market called Andesine, it is a heated stone diffused with copper to make it artificially red.

  • If you find a very colorful piece of Labradorite marketed as Spectrolite, it must show a range of colors and have a price tag to match.

  • Labradorite is 6 to a 6.5 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, so it should be easily scratched by any stone or object harder than a 6.5 like Quartz or a masonry drill bit. It should not be scratched by anything softer than a 6 like Apatite or a copper penny.

At Satin Crystals we have been selling real Labradorite since 2001, so you can shop with confidence. If you are buying from another online seller, make sure they are legitimate and knowledgeable about their crystals.

Are my countertops really Labradorite?

If you have chosen Blue Labradorite Granite for your countertops, you will have some Labradorite crystal in your stone. However, the main rock is called Anorthosite and you usually have a form of Larvikite when this stone is used in building design.

Anorthosite is also used for sculptures, window sills, tiles, and other architectural projects to add a sparkling shine when light hits the surface of the stone.

Is Labradorite the same as Moonstone?

Although they are both from the Feldspar family, Labradorite and Moonstone are not the same.

  • Labradorite is a plagioclase and calcium sodium Feldspar and can show a rainbow of iridescence reflecting within the crystal's twinning planes.

  • Moonstone is an orthoclase and potassium sodium Feldspar and only shows blue or white iridescence reflecting off Albite inclusions.

Rainbow Moonstone is actually a Labradorite stone, but it is most commonly referred to as a Moonstone in the gem trade. Rainbow Moonstone should technically be called Rainbow Labradorite.

Is Sunstone a Labradorite?

Sunstone is also a plagioclase Feldspar and it is a variety of Labradorite, but the shine of Sunstone is caused by metallic inclusions.

Some mines in Oregon have marketed a transparent Labradorite as "Oregon Sunstone." These are Labradorite stones found in orange, yellow, red, blue, green, or clear colors but do not show labradoresence. Instead, they have metallic copper inclusions that cause an aventurescent flash.

Is Larvikite a Labradorite?

Larvikite is not a Labradorite, but the two are often confused.

Labradorite is a Plagioclase Feldspar. Larvikite is an Augite Syenite or Monzonite mineral from Larvik Fjord region in Norway, mined since 1884. It can also be found in the USA, Canada, Mexico, and Russia.

Larvikite contains Feldspar but also contains Olivine, Biotite, Amphibole, Magnetite, Apatite, and other minerals. The minerals form large mosaic-like patterns over the dark stone. Larvikite also has a blue or silver flash because of its Plagioclase Feldspar inclusions.

What element is Labradorite?

Labradorite is associated with the element of Water. Water Element stones bring transformational energy.

Magical Incantation of Labradorite

This is a message from Labradorite from Doreen Virtue and Judith Lukomski's book "Crystal Therapy":

"Descended from galaxies and reflecting wizardry within, I'm the stone of internal connection. I link communication from the solar plexus to the brow, engaging you in new levels of contact with the Divine. Work with me with your eyes closed, as your body relaxes into its natural state. My energy allows safe access to wisdom, so you can travel to new dimensions; and my strength is bold, so be prepared to move quickly with increasing rhythms. Summon me when you're ready to journey beyond the confines of what's known, and when you're prepared to expand your consciousness."

What is the Labradorite Inuit Legend?

The Inuits have a legend about Labradorite. They storied that when the world was young the Northern Lights were trapped within the rocks of the Labrador coast. One day, a powerful Eskimo warrior rescued the Northern Lights from the rocks by striking them with his spear as hard as he could. The rainbow of lights floated to the sky to create the Aurora Borealis we see today

Is Labradorite rare or common?

Labradorite is a stone found in the common Feldspar group, which is popularly mined all over the world. However, within the Labradorite family, you can find rare Spectrolite pieces with a brilliant spectrum of colors to common dull gray pieces of the stone.

The market value will match the color play of the piece.

What crystals go well with Labradorite?

At Satin Crystals we believe all crystals work well together. Our offices are surrounded by a mix of crystals and we pile on crystal jewelry in infinite combination.

That being said, each person is different in their reaction to crystal energy. You may not feel as comfortable mixing Labradorite with other stones. In this case, we recommend first experimenting with a combination of Labradorite and other upper chakra crystals like Amethyst, Amazonite, and Kyanite.
