How do you care for Shungite?

Shungite can be cleaned under tap water, but don't rub hard unless it is polished. When in doubt, use a soft cloth or soft brush, depending on your piece. Either way, make sure your stone is completely dry before storage.

Like all-natural gemstones, Shungite should be handled with care. Hard impacts and harsh chemicals could ruin the stone.

Store Shungite away from items harder than a 3.5 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness to avoid chips and scratches. The raw pieces and Elite Shungite (with more carbon content) are especially brittle.

Can Shungite be cleansed in the sun?

Shungite can be placed in the sun for energetic charging, but for cleansing, we recommend a different method, like water, a singing bowl, or palo santo smoke.

For energetic cleansing, charging, and programming of Shungite, visit Crystal Care.

Sheila's personal experience with Shungite

I did not know much about Shungite before researching it. I knew that it was a popular protection stone and that it rubbed off black on my skin like a newspaper, but I didn't realize it had such a powerful electrical force.

My husband and I were both fascinated to learn that we could use his electrical multimeter to read real Shungite. Even a flashlight and a bulb would do the trick!

Shungite is a relatively new crystal we are stocking here at Satin Crystals, and now that we can give our customers the security of buying real Shungite, it's more motivating to stock up on the different formations of stones and create more Shungite jewelry!

Lisa's personal experience with Shungite

I've noticed Shungite gaining popularity here in Europe over the past three years. Before that, I did not know anything about the stone. I am naturally attracted to dark Protection stones, so I started sourcing real Shungite from Europe and sending it to Sheila, who works in the Satin Crystals studio, in the USA.

As I saw this crystal was a hit with our customers, I became more interested in Shungite too. My favorite pieces are spheres and pyramids. I am not usually drawn to pointy shapes like pyramids, but I love how Shungite pyramids look and feel. They are a beacon of protection, and they disperse higher energy into whatever room they sit. Smaller pieces like tumbled stones are easily planted near electronics to combat emissions, like on my computer desk or in my purse.

Sheila will be making new Shungite bracelets for Satin Crystals soon. Once I get hold of a piece, I can let you know how I feel about it. But you'll have to send me an email at hello@satincrystals.com or use the contact box below to get the latest scoop from Lisa!

What are Fullerenes?

Fullerenes are distinct carbon molecules recognized for their exceptional attributes, such as electrical conductivity. Shungite is one of the natural sources of Fullerenes, which are also found in meteorite impact sites, interstellar dust clouds, ancient rock sediments, and sooty flames.

What are the types of Shungite?

There are three main types of Shungite. Some vendors also sell Shungite types 4 and 5 with even less amounts of carbon. The carbon percentages vary by stone and study, so use them as a rough guide.

  1. Type I Shungite (Elite or Noble Shungite)
This type has the highest carbon content, with 90-98% carbon, and contains a significant amount of fullerenes. This is the rarest of Shungites and the heaviest but most fragile. It is metallic silver and can easily crumble in your hands, so it will not be found in polished forms unless it is stabilized.

  2. Type II Shungite (Petrovsky Shungite)
This type contains a lower carbon content, typically ranging from 35% to 75%. It is a matte, gray Shungite with fewer fullerenes. It is not found in polished forms because of its fragility.

  3. Type III Shungite (Common or Black Shungite)

This type has the lowest carbon content, usually 30-50%. It is matte black and can be polished into different shapes. It will look glossier when polished. It usually shows veins and mineral inclusions, and it is the most available of all the Shungite types. It may show veins of Quartz, Dolomite, or Pyrite.

How is Shungite formed?

The exact source of how Shungite formed remains unknown. Here are some theories:
  • Shungite formed through the metamorphism of crude oil, with some proposing it formed from the petrification of algae over billions of years.

  • Decomposing organic matter in sedimentary rocks combined with silt and mud sank underground, where heat and pressure compressed the material into Shungite over billions of years.

  • A meteorite carrying Shungite hit the Earth.

Where is Shungite found?

Shungite is primarily found in the Karelia Republic region of Russia, bordering Finland. Shungite is only found on the Russian side of the border.

Lake Onega is one of the popular sites, and Zazhoginsky is the most popular mine for authentic Shungite. This mine is also one of the only places in the world to get Elite Shungite.

It has also been found in other areas of Russia but in small quantities. Shungite has also been found in other countries, like the USA, China, Austria, India, Kazakhstan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, but the quality may not live up to the stone's namesake region.

Is Shungite just coal?

Although referred to as a type of coal, Shungite is not just coal. It is a distinct mineraloid, almost entirely composed of carbon. It is also known as mineralized carbon rock.

What are the industrial uses of Shungite?

  • Shungite is used as a black paint.

  • Shungite with reduced carbon content may be utilized in construction materials, like concrete and coatings, for its antimicrobial and protective attributes.

  • Exploration of Shungite's fullerenes in nanotechnology, medicine, and materials science continues.

Is Shungite safe to drink?

Shungite, a natural carbon-rich material, is widely used in water treatment. Research indicates that its high carbon content has effective absorption properties on organic compounds, heavy metals, and antibacterial effects.

However, when submerged in water, Shungite can also release toxic heavy metals like nickel, copper, zinc, lead, arsenic, and cadmium. A 2020 study concluded that washing Shungite in water for five days can reduce heavy metal levels. To lower heavy metal content, experts recommend soaking one part Shungite in 10 parts water for five days, changing the water daily prior to creating Shungite water.

Shungite chips may be used in aquariums, but monitor the water's pH levels as it may make it more acidic. Also, change out the water regularly to reduce the concentrations of heavy metals. Do your research beforehand as to what minerals your fish will tolerate.

Does Shungite really purify water?

While Shungite does purify water, it can also release heavy metals into the water. You must properly treat the stone before using it to purify water.

Is Shungite harmful?

Besides the risk of drinking Shungite water, other uses of Shungite are safe. Wearing Shungite jewelry or displaying stones in your home is safe.

When making gemstone elixirs, use the indirect method or cleanse the stones for an extensive period to leach out heavy metals before drinking the water.

Does Shungite leave a residue?

Yes, Shungite can rub off and leave black stains on your skin, your clothing, your paperwork, etc. This is the carbon residue and is a natural side effect of real Shungite.

You should always see this black stain with raw Shungite, but polishing and other methods may help to avoid stains with polished Shungite.

Some Shungite lovers welcome this residue as a healing powder and purposely use it in their beauty regimens. Others can wash their hands, and the powder will come off easily.

If Shungite has stained your clothing, shake off as much powder as possible and wash as usual.

Is Shungite good for your skin?

Shungite may be good for your skin because of its antibacterial properties. Some people claim it also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, although this has not been tested on humans.

There is a 2017 study done on mice in which Shungite helped heal their skin damage from UV radiation.

Regardless of its benefits, it is not toxic to the skin and is found in cosmetics, creams, and shampoos. However, those with sensitive skin or allergies should always test a small amount before using.

man wearing shungite necklaceIs Shungite found in jewelry?

Shungite is found in jewelry, but being a softer, more brittle stone, it is not as common as other gemstones. However, it is easy to carve and does give a shiny luster when polished.

You will usually find Black Shungite (the stuff with the lower amounts of carbon) in beads and cabochons. These may include other mineral inclusions and will not be solid black. They are lightweight and easy to wear but may stain skin and clothing black.

Elite Shungite (the stone with the highest amount of carbon) is the hardest to find polished because of its fragility. The raw stuff can crumble in your hands! If polished, it may be stabilized or coated for stability. You will find Elite Shungite in jewelry when left in its raw formation.

Should you wear a Shungite bracelet on your left or right hand?

At Satin Crystals, we believe that as long as the crystal is in your aura, it will be providing you with positive benefits. That being said, some people like to wear jewelry according to their dominant vs non-dominant hands.

Read more about the different energies this provides in the Ultimate Bracelet Guide.

Can you sleep with Shungite?
