How can the Root Chakra Benefit You?

When your Root Chakra is open and balanced, you will feel:

  • Strong life force energy
  • The will to live
  • Like you belong in the world
  • Safe and secure
  • Physically active
  • Connected to Mother Earth
  • Happy in the present moment
  • Excited about the future

What is the Root Chakra?

The Root chakra is your first major chakra in a series of seven. It is also known as the first chakra or the base chakra. It is the chakra that links your energy bodies to your physical body. It is associated with the primal sense of smell.

In Sanskrit, the Root chakra is known as Muladhara. Mula means Root and Adhara means Support.

Why is the Root chakra important?

The Root chakra is important because it is where your connection to the earth begins. You are like a tree, you need strong, deep roots to grow. With the family and social connections being so complex in this technologically fueled world, you need a sense of place and meeting for stability. You need that security that comes from rooting into the earth's nourishing nature.

From the time you were a baby in the womb, the Root chakra was developing to give you a sense of place in the world. Because it is developed from birth, your Root chakra is the first one that you must work on before moving up to the others.

The Root chakra provides you with your physical energy, your instincts, your will to live, and your connection to all other humans, animals, plants, and the "chi" life force.

Where is the Root chakra located?

The Root chakra is located at the first three vertebrae at the bottom of your spine or your groin area.

It is an energy vortex that spins vertically from the bottom of your feet, up your legs, and into the base of your spine.

Grounding energy from the earth rises and spins clockwise into your physical and etheric bodies through the Root chakra.

Why do we need to balance the Root chakra?

It is important to keep the Root chakra healthy because you are usually in need of grounding. In a world that is perpetually keeping you occupied mentally and materialistically, it's easy for the ego to go unchecked as you spiral into an over-analytical mind.

Grounding the Root chakra draws you back onto planet Earth, reminding you of your more basic and simplistic nature. The Root Chakra instills your sense of humanity and the understanding that life is passing while death is certain. It entails the power of happiness in drawing you down to the moment- the beauty and glory of the Now.

While this chakra keeps you rooted to the Earth, you don't want to live solely in the Root energy. Focusing only on the Root chakra would lead to a life of power dominance, territorial issues, violence and ego. This is why you want to balance all of the chakras at all times.

What causes Root chakra imbalance?

Because the Root chakra is developing upon your grand entrance into the world, it is highly susceptible to your upbringing.

If you had a happy and loving home as a child, you feel secure and safe and your Root chakra developed healthily. You feel like you belong in the world.

If you had a neglectful or abusive home as a child, you feel abandoned and traumatized and your Root chakra became blocked. You feel lost in the world.

How do you know when your Root chakra is blocked?

When your Root chakra is blocked, you have very little will to live. Depending on the severity of the block, you could feel a little lethargic all the way to suicidal.

This chakra imbalance can lead to restlessness, anger, rage, low self-esteem, pessimism, narrow mindedness, anxiety, overthinking, and nightmares. Because you are not properly rooted to the earth, you could show signs of greed, waste and desctruction of nature.

Traumas that are stuck in your Root chakra could have been passed down from generations or even past lives. It is up to you to take control of your current situation and focus on balancing the Root chakra, getting rid of the past baggage, and processing the trauma.

It may not be easy to unblock your Root chakra on your own. You may benefit from seeing a crystal healer, a past life hypnotherapist, or a clinical psychologist.

How do you know when your Root chakra is open?

When the Root chakra is open, you love to stop and smell the roses. You appreciate every moment that life has to offer. Even if you don't have much materialistically, you are grateful for what you have.

You are happy with your life and comfortable in your body. You have good self-esteem. You are optimistic, positive, and open-minded. You trust easily and always see the light at the end of the tunnel.

An open Root chakra motivates you to ensure physical health. It is not a chore to eat, exercise, and live a stress-free lifestyle.

While maintaining physical health is important, having a balanced Root chakra allows you to see the big picture: this body is only a temporary shell. When the shell starts to fall apart, you still have the strength and courage to live out your life in prosperity. You accept the fact that you are made of earth's elements and when you die, you return to the earth.

This chakra is all about material enjoyment. You are on earth to enjoy what earth has to offer. Enjoy your favorite hobbies, foods, and people to the fullest. Savor every wonderful bit of it. Being a balanced person does not mean forsaking physical pleasure, it means indulging in it fully in a healthy way.

There are six other chakras to handle spiritual matters. For now, let's open that Root chakra!

What color is the Root chakra?

The Root Chakra is strongly associated with the color red. This is a slow-moving color wavelength, associated with stimulation, blood, life, and birth. It is the first color of the rainbow, the lowest color of the spectrum.

The Root chakra is also associated with black, brown, and gray for grounding energy through the feet.

How do you open the Root Chakra with crystals?

Once you have collected your desired Root chakra crystals, you'll need to know how to use them.

    • Visualize your Root chakra like a ball of red light. Imagine the light getting stronger and stronger as the crystals infuse the Root chakra with strength.

    • Visualize yourself rooting into the core of the earth like a sturdy and growing tree.

Here are some practical ideas on where to put the crystals:

    • Lie down and place the crystals at the base of your spine

    • Hold Root chakra spheres during meditation

    • Use Root chakra massage wands to massage the base of your spine

    • Hold gemstone eggs in each hand and visualize the Root chakra opening

    • Place Root chakra tumbled stones in your pockets

    • Surround yourself with Root chakra stones and lie in a crystal grid

    • Create a Root chakra crystal mandala

    • Drink a Root chakra gem elixir

How should I wear Root chakra jewelry?

If you are not actively engaged in a crystal healing session, but you want the benefits of Root chakra crystals with you throughout your day, consider wearing gemstone jewelry.

Here are some ideas for wearing Root chakra jewelry:

Sheila's personal experiences with the Root chakra

I was fortunate to grow up in a happy and loving home, so I always felt safe and secure. This has led to healthy self-esteem and, for the most part, an open Root chakra.

However, life's obstacles that happen naturally along the way, have caused me many Root chakra imbalances. When this happens, my favorite crystals to use are Moqui Marbles, especially when I can't get outside (because I'm busy writing valuable information for you). These earthy stones remind me of crystallized dirt and I can hold them at my desk while at the computer.

Hip opening yoga poses are also my favorites because I'm sitting at the computer so long, these postures open the base of my spine to the energy flow. I also like to take breaks in my outdoor atrium, visit my dogs and cats for a pet, and take daily walks around the neighborhood. I can really feel an energy shift while engaging in these activities.

Looking around for red flowers for the pictures in this article was a fun activity. It turns out red is not that common of a flower color as pink, purple, yellow, and white around here. But, when you do see it, it screams out and has your attention. And, after reading about your Root chakra, you will forever associate red with your most basic needs, instincts, and life force.

Lisa's personal experiences with the Root chakra

My favorite Root Chakra stones are Obsidian and Cuprite. As someone who is constantly living in my head, I need to ground my Root Chakra on a routine basis. When I think about the Root Chakra, I think of it as the energy in my body that can tap into the Power of Now.

Holding any crystal can be a very grounding experience because most of the are born of the earth, but Root chakra stones are especially defusing.

Other activities I enjoy for grounding are walking outside, petting the cats, playing with my son (who is definitely living in the moment), and also being around my husband (who is much more physically oriented than I).

Eating good food and listening to music also work to activate the senses. Root Chakra energy is all about indulging the physical and living to the fullest.

What is the mantra for the Root chakra?

If you are doing some manifestation work at the Root chakra, here are some affirmations to get you started. Chant these mantras to attract your desires:

    • I am grounded to the earth
    • I am living my best life
    • The Earth nourishes me
    • I have a strong will to live
    • I feel comfortable in my body
    • I know my place in this world
    • I overcome all obstacles; all obstacles are valuable lessons
    • I keep an open mind
    • I live a balanced and healthy lifestyle

How can you strengthen your Root chakra?

Alongside your crystals, there are many other ways to help you keep grounded. Have your Root chakra crystals and jewelry while engaging in other grounding exercises like:

    • Playing with or petting your animals: Pets are always living in the present moment, they are soothing to your nerves and bring you joy.

    • Walking or jogging barefoot in a grassy field, a sandy beach, or a trickling stream connects you directly with Mother Nature.

    • Working out and doing exercises that get your blood flowing.

    • Gardening gets your hands pleasantly dirty, puts you in a hypnotic state, and focuses your mind on life energy.

    • Doing any daily activity (eating, shopping, driving) mindfully. This means you are engaging all of your five senses into what you are doing and doing it with purposeful intention rather than rushing through while thinking of something else.

    • Gazing at the color red. Make a game of finding all of the red colors as you go through your day; like a holistic version of "Where's Waldo?"

    • Apply earthy essential oils like tree scents or roots like ginger at the base of your spine or the bottom of your feet.

    • Specific tai chi, qigong, and yoga poses balance the Root chakra.

    • Meditation can call upon your higher frequencies to assist you in your Root chakra balance.

cherries and red crystalsWhat food is good for the Root chakra?

You guessed it, root vegetables! All the nutritious foods that grow underground like potatoes, carrots, radishes, etc, are great for the Root chakra.

Additionally, naturally red foods like berries, cherries, apples, beets, etc are stimulating to the Root chakra.

What note is the Root chakra?

Every chakra vibrates at a specific frequency. The Root chakra vibrates at 432 Hz or the musical note G. At this vibration, you can align the Root chakra to flow open.

Use tuning forks, musical instruments, and singing bowls specific to the Root chakra's note to balance this area.
