What is Jasper?

The name Jasper originates from a Greek word for "spotted stone", referring to its colorful inclusions.

Jasper is a form of Chalcedony, which is formed from microscopic Quartz. Jasper is the opaque variety of Chalcedony and comes in numerous colors. The mineral "impurities" in the Chalcedony make up the stone Jasper.

Chert is an umbrella term for hard, brittle sedimentary rock of crystalline Quartz with chemical base of silica SiO2. Red, brown, reddish-brown and yellowish-brown varieties of Chert are called Jasper.

Sheila's personal experience with Jasper stones

I use Red Jasper tumbled stones in my car for grounding energy. I also used a Red Jasper pendulum in the car as a parking crystal to help me find good parking spots. However, I removed that when it was swinging around too much!

Next, I will try it for Dream Recall. I have been using Ulexite under the pillow for Dream Clarity, now I need some recall so the dream doesn’t fade away with the waking minutes!

Lisa's personal experience with Jasper stones

There are so many Jaspers to choose from... where do I start? I am most attracted to animal patterned Jaspers. These include Snake Jasper (I love white and brown the most!), Crocodile Jasper (what fun eyes!), Leopard Jasper, and Dalmatian Jasper.

I use animal themed Jaspers to get in touch with the natural grounding earth energy they provide me. I balance that with spiritual activity by using Animal Jaspers when I do walkabout meditations.

When I feel like getting in touch with my Snake animal guardian, I will hold my Snake Jasper ball, close my eyes, and allow it to deliver wise messages to me. When I want motivation, I put on my Leopard Jasper earrings, close my eyes, and let it infuse my mind with ideas and drive. Jasper is so fun and versatile.

What's your favorite Jasper animal? If you can't decide on one, try Safari Jasper! Gain the insight and stealth of the whole wild jungle!

What are the types of Jaspers?

Jasper comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. As we said, Jasper is a variety of Chalcedony, but it incorporates other minerals into its structure for color and solidity.

How do you identify Jasper?

Jasper is always opaque. If you have a translucent stone that looks like Jasper it is most likely one of Chalcedony's other forms like Agate or Carnelian.

Jasper has unique patterns not common in other stones. Most Jasper is untreated.

Jasper is a durable stone at a 6 to 7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. Real Jasper is full of microscopic Quartz crystal, making it a tough stone, not easily scratched by a steel knife.

Keep in mind that Jasper is not a scientific name for the stone, so if you are speaking in geology terms, you will find it under varieties of Cryptocrystalline Quartz or Microcrystalline Quartz. To be a true Jasper, the stone must have a high silica (or Quartz) content.

A lot of stones in the gem trade that named Jasper are not actually Jasper (example: Dalmatian Jasper, Bumblebee Jasper, or Kambaba Jasper).

What are Jasper's mineral facts?

  • Mohs Scale of Hardness: 6 - 7

  • Surface Color: Multiple

  • Streak Color (can vary from surface color, this is the color of the crystals’ powdered minerals): White or Colorless

  • Group: Silicate

  • Cleavage (where the crystal breaks off naturally to form a new face, parallel to its structure. This is a clean break and can cleave over and over again along the same face, retaining the crystals structure): None

  • Fracture (where the crystal breaks randomly, not on cleavage): Conchoidal (concave clam-like glassy break) to splintery

  • Luster: Vitreous (glassy)

  • Transparency: Opaque (light does not go through)

  • Crystal System: Cryptocrystalline (very tiny crystals only seen through special crystal microscope)

  • Crystal Habit: Massive micro granular Quartz

How is Jasper formed?

Jasper is formed when silica-rich waters flow through veins and cracks of volcanic rocks, picking up an assortment of other minerals along the way. The silica cements the minerals into the existing Chalcedony stone to form the opaque Jasper.

You will often see white Quartz veins, translucent Chalcedony, or Agate bands running through your Jasper stones.

Where is Jasper found?

Jasper is found worldwide, wherever microscopic Quartz is found. It is a common stone that comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns.

Keep it away from crystals that are harder than a 6 to 7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness to avoid scratching.
