What is Amazonite?

Amazonite (or Amazon Stone) is the only blue-green crystal and the only gem variety of Microcline Feldspar. Microcline is the most common Feldspar.

Other Feldspar family members that you probably know are Moonstone, Sunstone and Labradorite. The Feldspar family is known for its distinctive iridescent sheen. Amazonite is no exception to this phenomena and upon the surface of the stone, you will often find a dancing shine.

The distinctive sheen is caused by the thin layers of Orthoclase and Albite. This iridescence is also known as Schiller Sheen and opalescence.

Sheila's personal experience with Amazonite

Back when I still had my wisdom teeth, they would sporadically grace me with periods of severe pain. I looked up stones associated with gums and teeth. Amazonite was one of the crystals recommended for teeth pain.

I then used a tumbled Amazonite stone programmed to alleviate the throbbing pain held against my jaw and focused on the non-painful side of the mouth.

Although Amazonite could not solve the problem caused by the wisdom teeth crowding my mouth, it provided me with temporary relief. The stone allowed me focus on self-healing rather than the pain.

This traumatic time left me with a fond memory of Amazonite.

Lisa's personal experience with Amazonite

I like Amazonite for its silver sheen. It draws me in like the other stones of the Feldspar family.

I turn to Amazonite if I'm feeling frustrated or hot tempered. Its sea green color brings a swift and sudden sensation of much needed calm zen. I enjoy it best in the form of polished stones and spheres.

Although I appreciate any high quality Amazonite that has a superb sheen to it, I find myself most attracted to the strong minty green ones. I have encountered some mint green stones with black mineral inclusions that really remind of of Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream! These pieces are deliciously cooling and take me back to my youth.  Mint chocolate chip ice cream is still one of my favorite picks, as is Amazonite.

How is Amazonite formed?

Amazonite is often found forming with Smoky Quartz, Orthoclase and Albite in coarse granite or pegmatites.

Pegmatites are formed when magma in the earth cools and coarse grained rocks form within the earth’s surface. These pegmatites are made of of coarse granite and can contain unique minerals like Amazonite.

As for Amazonite's mesmerizing hues, it was previously thought that the blue-green color was caused by copper like so many other blue and green stones. They later found that the color is caused by lead and water.

Where is Amazonite found?

Even though it was named after the Amazon River, Amazonite is actually not found in the Amazon. The guess is that it was named after the green colors of the rainforest. Amazonite is actually found other places in the world, with some of the biggest deposits coming from Colorado & Virginia USA, Brazil, Russia, Madagascar and Australia.

What is the Hardness of Amazonite?

Amazonite is a 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, making it just a tiny bit softer than Quartz and a tiny bit harder than Glass.

Can you cleanse Amazonite in water?

Amazonite can be put in water. Cleanse Amazonite physically under running water, a trickling stream or a fountain. It can take mild soap and light rubbing.

If you are worried about the lead involved in the Amazonite stone's coloring, don´t be. It is such a tiny trace amount and it is so tightly woven in the stone's structure, that there is absolutely no harm to your body.

turquoise vs amazonite stones - satin crystals meanings

Is Amazonite the same as Turquoise?

If you are not yet familiar with your natural stones, you may confuse Amazonite for Turquoise. They can have the same intense turquoise color, but that is where the similarities end.

Amazonite forms with a white to gray background and Turquoise has a black background. Something that you can not tell by sight alone is that both stones are formed differently within the Earth. Whereas Amazonite's color comes from Lead, Turquoiseś blue-green color comes from Copper.

Another crystal that is sometimes confused with Amazonite is Aquamarine. But Aquamarine has a more translucent, glassy look to it. It will not show the webbing like Amazonite often has.
