What makes Rose Quartz pink?

There is a debate as to how Rose Quartz gets its pink color. For many years it was thought to be colored by inclusions of Titanium, Manganese, and Iron. In recent studies, Rose Quartz is thought to be colored by pink Dumortierite, or a very similar mineral which they dub Dididumortierite.

The color of Dididumortierite is stable until it reaches temperatures over 575° Celsius.

What is Pink Quartz?

While Rose Quartz is a pink form of Quartz, there is a different crystal that is specifically called Pink Quartz.

Pink Quartz gets its color from aluminum and phosphorus, it quickly fades in sunlight, and is extremely rare. It was first discovered in 1959 in Brazil. It is exclusively sold to collectors and t is not carved or used in jewelry like Rose Quartz.

Why is my Rose Quartz white?

Sometimes your Rose Quartz may look white, but it is a very pale pink. If it is truly white, then you have Snow Quartz on your hands.

If your Rose Quartz started pink and turned white, it may have faded in the sunlight. You may also have Pink Quartz rather than Rose Quartz in your possession as Pink Quartz is much more prone to fading.

The metaphysical definition of your crystals changing colors is that it is has exhausted its healing energy. If your emotional heart-healing took a toll on your Rose Quartz, it may have drained the crystal of its color. Don't fear, after giving it a rest, you can reprogram it and use it as a colorless Quartz crystal. Immediately replace your Rose Quartz with a fresh piece!

Does Rose Quartz form crystals?

Rose quartz never forms crystal points as Quartz does. It forms in a massive chunk. If you do find a pink stone forming a crystal shape, it is called Pink Quartz.

Where is Rose Quartz found?

Like Quartz, Rose Quartz is an abundant stone found all over the world. Popular mining locations are in Madagascar, Namibia, the USA, Brazil, India, and South Africa.

How does Rose Quartz form?

Rose Quartz forms in very high temperatures in pegmatites (an igneous rock formed underground with interlocking crystals) and hydrothermal veins (think mineral-rich veins of boiling water).

How can you tell if Rose Quartz is real?

Lucky for us, it is usually not worth it to create synthetic Rose Quartz because the real stuff is so abundant. However, sometimes pink glass can be sold as Rose Quartz.

Here are a few key points to note when shopping for real Rose Quartz.

  • Real Rose Quartz will have some inclusions and cloudiness.

  • Real Rose Quartz is a 7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness so it will not be scratched by the glass, but glass will be scratched by Rose Quartz. A steel knife will not scratch Rose Quartz but it will scratch the glass.

  • Glass may show bubbles from the glass blowing process that Rose Quartz will not.

Always buy from a trusted vendor who knows what they are talking about! And, if they don't have an answer, they will say so outright.

I once had a client who wanted her "Rose Quartz" bracelet restrung and when I cut it apart, the beads were white! It was the pink cord that was making the white Quartz look like Rose Quartz.

How do you know if Rose Quartz is dyed?

While there is not much incentive to create synthetic Rose Quartz, there is a motivation for vendors to sell dyed Rose Quartz. A lot of natural Rose Quartz is a very pale pink, so the dye enhances the attraction of the stones.

Here are ways to tell if your Rose Quartz is dyed:

  • Soak it in acetone (nail polish remover) and see if the liquid turns pink

  • Take note of the veins, holes, and cracks on the stone to see if there is any pooling of pink dye

We did a test on a strand of beads from a vendor we had not purchased Rose Quartz before. They had it listed as natural, which means untreated. However, upon arrival, I noticed suspicious pools of pink in the cracks of the beads. I tested it in acetone and the liquid turned bright pink. The vendor claimed this was natural, but obviously, we will not be buying "natural" Rose Quartz from them again.

There is nothing wrong with dyed Rose Quartz if you know it's dyed. At Satin Crystals we always state the treatment of your stones to the best of our knowledge.

What causes the star in Rose Quartz?

The star in Rose Quartz is caused by fibrous threads of rutile minerals. These special Star Rose Quartz crystals show a phenomenon called asterism.

Star Rose Quartz is stunning because when you shine a flashlight or bright sunlight across the surface at the correct angle, you will see dancing asterism lines. To admire the star asterism in action, watch our Star Rose Quartz Video.

Lisa's Personal Experience with Rose Quartz

As a kid, I hated the color pink or anything that was "girly". Although I'm still far from the most feminine of women, pink gradually came to be my favorite color at some point in my twenties. Yet, at that time I was still not very attracted to or interested in Rose Quartz. I thought it a little bit dull. But just like my love for pink went from zero to bloom, so did my love for Rose Quartz.

What roped me into the world of lovely Rose Quartz was the discovery of Star Madagascar Rose. After seeing dancing asterisms and flashes on this extra special variation, I had a change of heart. Now, whenever I think of Rose Quartz or pick something out, I'm all about the star. Wondering what the heck I'm talking about? Check out this video.

Sheila's Personal Experience with Rose Quartz

When working on the Heart chakra, I have always preferred stronger stones like Malachite and Aventurine. However, I have had many friends and clients swear by Rose Quartz.

One friend I know bought herself a few Rose Quartz bracelets when she heard it was a stone of love. She just wanted to get back in the dating game. In the end, she called to tell me that she had too many dates! She dialed back on the love stone but was grateful for the crystal's energy.

How do you cleanse Rose Quartz?

To energetically cleanse your Rose Quartz, you can choose any of the popular methods because it is a stone that can withstand a soak in water. Because of its strong association with the Earth Element, Rose Quartz loves to be charged up in earthy elements like soil, sand, brown rice, etc.

Keep it away from crystals that are harder than a 7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness to avoid scratching.

Can you leave Rose Quartz in the sun?

If left in the sun, Rose Quartz can fade. This will not happen to all Rose Quartz, but if you are unsure and you want to preserve the pink shade of your particular crystal, keep it away from direct sunlight. Indirect sunlight is okay.

Magical Incantation of Rose Quartz

This is a message from Rose Quartz stone from Doreen Virtue and Judith Lukomski's book "Crystal Therapy":

"I embody the essence of authentic love. By opening your heart chakra to encourage complete self-acceptance, I help soothe wounds of sadness and distrust with enveloping feelings of unconditional love that allow forgiveness to occur. I remind you that all feel joy and sorrow when they're in human form and that emotions are a gift. Operating with me promotes both this regard for yourself and inclusive tolerance."

What does Rose Quartz mean in divination?

Drawing Rose Quartz in a gemstone divination session means: It's time to focus on your Heart chakra and opening up to love which you have shied away from.

Use Rose Quartz crystals to see the beauty in your situation. When you shine a pink light on a tough dilemma, you will see the solution through rose-colored glasses. It reminds you that there are no mistakes in life; whatever you decide, there will be a bright side.
