What is Quartz?
Quartz is also known as Rock Crystal. Rock Crystal is the clear white Quartz at its purest form. Quartz is the most common mineral in the Earth’s crust. 70% of the land we walk on is from Quartz or some form of silicate.
Impurities and inclusions give the Quartz family the greatest variety of crystals including Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Tigers Eye, Aventurine, Citrine, Rutilated Quartz, Chalcedony, Prase, and more.
The name Quartz Crystal comes from the German word "quartz" meaning "hard" and the Ancient Greek word "kruos" meaning "icy cold"
What are the metaphysical properties of Quartz?
Quartz is known as the Master Healing crystal. It is the foundation of crystal healing and a must-have for lightworkers. Quartz is the ruler of the crystal kingdom because it possesses broad powers.
Clear Quartz activates all your chakras at once while also purifying your aura. Quartz vibrates clear white light which contains all the colors and is therefore perfect to balance all the chakras and fills the aura with optimism and joy.
It can be programmed for anything you desire and gives equal attention to your many manifestation goals. It can help you accomplish all healing for yourself and others.
While Clear Quartz is strong, Milky and White Quartz also contain a lot of information to a healer. Using it for energy healing can turn clear Quartz cloudy and Milky quartz clear over time.
Clear Quartz has yang energy, while Milky Quartz has yin energy. It is the intermediate between the visible and invisible worlds, an instrument of clairvoyance.
Another impressive quality of Quartz is that it comes in a variety of colors and formations. All Quartz aid self-healing and channels high frequency to the physical plane. Every variety of Quartz has a special meaning and healing property.
What are the different types of Quartz?
Depending on the minerals present at the time of formation or the manmade processes, Quartz will be found in a large variety of types.
Aura Quartz is a natural Quartz coated with metals to give it an iridescent range of colors. In crystal healing, Aura Quartz is used to enhance meditations and astral travels. Because the coated metals are natural, these brilliant crystals are used to elevate your vibrations.

Clear Quartz, also known as Rock Quartz, is prized for its clarity and ice-like appearance. Clear Quartz usually shows some amount of inclusions like shiny planes, mineral deposits, and rainbow sheen. These inclusions are especially beneficial in crystal gazing, chakra balancing, and energy healing practices.
In crystal healing, Clear Quartz is used for clarity, chakra healing, and enhancing the energy of your aura. Erase self-doubt and see through the illusions when using this amplifying stone. Only then will the manifestation flow.
Girasol Quartz, also known as Moon Quartz, is a natural crystal with a hazy, translucent sheen with a milky cast. The girasol effect is when a stone shows an internal floating glow, and in this case, it is a white glow.

What are the different shapes of Quartz?
Here are a few types of natural Quartz shape formations you will find in the world:
Aggregator Crystal is a large crystal entirely or partially covered with smaller crystals. The large crystal is the old soul containing the wisdom that attracts the smaller crystals. Use Aggregator Crystals to attract and gather new ideas, people, and opportunities. Also known as Barnacle Crystals.
Ancestral Quartz shows striated markings resembling abrasions or "bar codes" on one or more sides of the crystal's face. These crystals contain information from Ancient times and the Akashic Records. Use the knowledge of Ancestral Quartz for self-healing and healing others.
Bridge Quartz crystals aid the healing process by bridging universal energies from the spiritual world to the physical body. A Bridge crystal is a smaller crystal growing out of another at nearly a right angle with the base of the smaller crystal inside the larger and most of the smaller crystal outside of the larger.
Burr Quartz is a completely three-dimensional cluster with no center matrix and points radiating from the center only. Burr Quartz represents freedom and unlimited potential.
Cactus Quartz, or Spirit Quartz, is when a large crystal is overgrown with a layer of smaller spiky crystals.
Diamond Window Quartz shows a diamond-shaped face between two of the natural 6 faces of a Quartz tip. The window forms below the tip of the crystal but before the body.
Double Terminated Quartz is pointed at both ends of the crystal. It is a simultaneous receiver and transmitter of energy. Helps to dissolve stagnant energy to promote flow and movement. Use Double Terminated crystals to balance the left and right brains, balance yin and yang, masculine and feminine.
Dolphin Quartz formations are smaller crystals riding along the side of a larger host crystal. Dolphin crystals teach us to be aware of our place on the Earth and how to protect it for coming generations. The Dolphin crystal shows us that we are part of the Big Picture and are responsible for moving our species forward in a responsible manner. Dolphin crystals help us keep our focus on educating, teaching, and guiding the souls around us.
Druzy Quartz contains microscopic crystals growing on a host rock. These crystals cause a shiny glittery effect on the stone. Druzy Quartz aids in progressing in life. Includes the properties of Quartz.
Empathetic Warrior Quartz is one that has been through damage naturally in the earth or by man.
Enhydro Quartz shows cavities within the crystal with trapped water. This water will move when the crystal is shaken.
Faden Quartz shows a white vein of Quartz running through a translucent crystal. Faden means thread in German.
Fairy Quartz is a cluster of clear, well formed, needle-like crystals. The delicate clusters are hard to find because they have to be so delicately mined and cleaned. Fairy Quartz takes you to a magical place where mythical creatures and fairytales are a possibility. It elevates your vibrations and lifts your jaded veil so you can see past the mundane world.
Family Quartz is a cluster containing two larger "parent" crystals and one or more smaller "children" crystals.
Inner Child Quartz is similar to a Bridge Crystal but instead of the smaller crystal growing mostly outside of the big one, the Inner Child is growing mostly inside of the big crystal. In crystal healing, Inner Child Quartz reminds us to nurture our inner selves to remain balanced in the present moment.
Lemurian Seed Crystals are natural Quartz points with striations on one or more sides. The striations are lined grooves and can be activated by rubbing the striated surface.
In crystal healing, Lemurian Seed Crystals were said to have been planted in the last days of an ancient civilization known as the Lemurians. They were programmed to transmit a message of Oneness, love, and equality. Lemuria is believed to have been a civilization whose consciousness was centered on spiritual and emotional balance.
Lemurian Quartz crystals are attracted to people who will actively assist in enhancing the energies that aid the planet. Lemurian crystals are the perfect stone for opening the Heart chakra. Direct them at any person, place, or thing that needs an energy boost.
Manifestation Quartz is one where a complete crystal is growing inside the larger crystal. You should be able to clearly see the small crystal within. As the name suggests, Manifestation Quartz is used in crystal healing to manifest your goals. It births your inner desires and sees them come to life.
Picture Windows are rough stones with one polished side. In crystal healing, picture windows are used for gazing. They can also be used to rub the smooth surface and use them as worry stones.
Record Keeper Quartz have natural etched pyramids protruding from the crystal face. In crystal healing, Record Keepers are used to access the ancient knowledge of Atlantis and the Akashic Records.
Scepter Quartz is a crystal with growth that is wider at the top of the crystal than at the bottom. It occurs when a second crystal grows on top of the first and makes the whole crystal resemble a scepter or a mushroom. In crystal healing, Scepter Quartz points you in the right direction. Meditating with this formation will open your mind in directions you never even though of.
Skeleton Quartz occurs when the edges of the Quartz grows faster than the faces. The edges look protruded like a frame around the faces of the stone.
Twin Quartz are two points sharing the same crystal body with no division from the middle to the base. Twin crystals teach us to appreciate the state of unity between body and mind and ultimately others around us. It teaches the secrets of soul partnerships and how to be in a relationship with another without losing yourself.
Sheila's personal experience with Quartz
When I used to do crystal healing sessions for clients, I used Quartz pendulums to check the energy flow of the client’s chakras. Quartz is very accurate in reading energies and can tell which chakras are blocked. I then used Quartz generator wands to open the blocked chakras.
Currently, I keep a very large Quartz cluster to charge my crystals and purify the home’s atmosphere.
Lisa's personal experience with Quartz
I like high-quality Brazilian Quartz with rainbows and crisp shiny sheen. I have gazed into Quartz crystal balls, along with my students. I found natural and real Quartz balls to be way more fascinating than the mass-manufactured "crystal" balls that flood the market. Gazing into a Quartz ball lets you leave world thoughts behind, get swept into the mesmerizing patterns of the sphere, and transcend.
Rutilated Quartz steals a piece of my heart as well. Particularly attractive are the pieces from Madagascar that have fine needles suspended in clear Quartz. I like Rutilated Quartz because it gets to the root of things. It's a problem-solving stone.
There is a Quartz ball in my home. There is a Quartz cluster on the patio. There is a large Quartz tower in the dining room. I have Quartz earrings and a Rutilated Quartz necklace.
Quartz is the staple of the crystal world. Love it, own it, wear it!
How do you clean Quartz crystals?
Quartz is one of the crystals that can be cleaned in water. Run it under water or soak it in a bowl of water overnight.
However, you should still be careful using the water method if your Quartz is in its raw form or has any natural fracture lines within its polished form. In this case, we recommend gently cleaning the crystal with a wet cloth.
How do you cleanse Quartz crystals?
If you are looking to metaphysically cleanse, charge, and program crystals, visit our Crystal Care guide.
For metaphysical cleansing, many healers believe that crystal clusters are self-cleansing, so you don't have to energetically cleanse Quartz clusters. You can place other crystals onto Quartz clusters to cleanse and charge their energies.
Is Quartz sun-safe?
Quartz is sun-safe and can withstand the outdoor elements. You can keep this crystal in your garden or patio throughout the year. Please note that if it is polished, your Quartz may lose its luster as it weathers outdoors.
To metaphysically charge Quartz outside, you can charge it in the sun for a 12-hour cycle. Clear Quartz is particularly beneficial in solar energy while Snow Quartz is great with moon energy.
Can Quartz catch on fire?
While Quartz itself will not catch on fire, it can concentrate the rays of light to cause a fire like glass can. Keep it away from flammable objects (unless you in the wilderness and you're trying to build a fire!).
Although resistent to catching on fire, if heated to high temperatures and suddenly cooled, Quartz will crack. This is how you achieve the crackle Quartz look.
What chakra is Clear Quartz good for?
Clear Quartz is good for balancing all of the chakras. Because it does not align to any one color, it vibrates to open any of your blocked chakras.

Why is my Clear Quartz cloudy when healing?
Like other crystals that change colors, you may find your clear Quartz turning cloudy during your energy healing practice. A lot of our clients report their crystals changing in shades or colors when they are doing intense energy work.
If you feel like your Quartz has been energized with the healing work, continue to use it with the knowledge that it has attuned to your vibrations.
If you feel like your Quartz has absorbed too much unwanted energy, cleanse it and recharge it before using it again.
Magical Quartz Incantation
This is a message from Quartz from Doreen Virtue and Judith Lukomski's book "Crystal Therapy":
"Alpha and omega in the mineral kindgom, I reign without question. From my foundation, the spark of possibilites is sent to begin facilitating your deeper attunement with the unseen. My vibrational pattern serves as a launch point, providing tangible evidence that energy transformation functions as an amplifier, generator, receiver, and cleanser. When in doubt, select me to act as the custodian of your intent so that you may experience the gifts of Divine guidance, motivation, and clarity."
What does Quartz mean in divination?
Drawing Quartz during a gemstone divination session means: Blessings are waiting to be bestowed upon you.
Use your Quartz crystals to bring your life into balance. Whatever chakra needs a tune-up, concentrate the amplifying energy of Quartz in its direction. When your soul feels at peace, the blessings will rain upon you with ease.
What is the use of Quartz crystals in everyday life?
Because it is so abundant, tough, and precise in its vibrating frequency, Quartz is one of the most useful natural substances on earth. Besides crystal healing, Quartz crystal is used in optical components like glass, lenses, and prisms. It is the main ingredient in glass when it is found in pure deposits of 98% Quartz sand. The sand is mined and melted into glass.
Quartz is also an ingredient in paints and abrasives. It is used in sandpaper, soap, and ceramics. Because of its hardness, it is great to use as grit.
The regular, predictable electric pulses that Quartz emits makes it a wonderful crystal for electronics like clocks, watches, computers, and TVs. These days, synthetic Quartz has replaced natural Quartz in oscillators for electronics.
Why do Quartz crystals vibrate?
Quartz crystals vibrate because they are piezoelectric. This means they will release an electric charge when under mechanical pressure.
Quartz vibrates at an exact frequency. When you pass an electric current through the crystal, it will vibrate 32,768 times per second.
How do you identify a clear Quartz crystal?
-
Clear Quartz usually has small inclusions within the stone. It will not show air bubbles like glass though.
-
Natural Quartz crystals are hexagonal, they have six facets and come to a six-sided pyramid at the top. However, some Quartz may not be fully formed and can show a three-sided pyramid at the top.
-
Quartz is a 7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, so it will not be scratched by glass, a steel knife, a penny, or anything lower than a 7.
-
Quartz has a white or clear streak when scratched on a streak plate (unglazed tile).
-
Quartz will show rough edges at its fracture points instead of a smooth plane. It may also show a conchoidal fracture, which is a swirling pattern.
- Real Quartz is cooler than glass. Glass is usually room temperature where Quartz is a little cooler.
How can you tell if your crystal ball is real?
Crystal balls come in a variety of stones. However, if you are looking for a Clear Quartz crystal ball, you could be faced with three options: Real Quartz, Clarified Quartz, or Glass.
If your seller does not know the nature of your crystal ball, you can perform the tests above to tell if your Quartz is authentic. To tell the difference between Clarified Quartz and Real Quartz, look for the natural inclusions.
Clarified Quartz, or Reconstituted Quartz, is very clear like glass. It will not have the natural inclusions as Real Quartz does. In this case, the Quartz is crushed, heated, the inclusions are removed, and then it is shaped into a sphere.
Because it takes so much time and material to create crystal balls out of Real Quartz, Clarified Quartz is a substitute for those who don't want to use the cheapest option, glass. Clarified Quartz may not hold the full energy of Real Quartz, but it does contain bits and pieces of real crystal.

How does Quartz form?
Quartz can be formed through igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic processes. Quartz is found in fissures in sandstones, cavities in marbles, druses in pegmatites, and in septaria as shiny diamond-like crystals (like Herkimer Diamonds). It forms in clusters, gigantic single points, and massive rocks. A single crystal was found in Kazakhstan at 70 tons.
The clearest Quartz comes from Arkansas because it has no rock base; just the points join together crystallizing in different directions. Milky Quartz grows from a common base and is filled with inclusions, planes, and veins. Fine fractures, thin films of air interfere with light create beautiful rainbow planes.
Quartz is very weather resistant. When bedrock erodes, Quartz finds its way to rivers where it is the main component of pebbles, sand, and gravel. It is a 7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness.
Where is Quartz found in the world?
Quartz is found all over the Earth. It forms in all kinds of temperatures and conditions, making it abundant around the world.
Because it is so durable and weather-resistant, you will find Quartz everywhere, from the bottom of the oceans to the top of the mountains.
What are the mineral facts of Quartz?
Quartz is a relatively hard stone registering at 7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. The chemical formula for Quartz is SiO₂.
Surface Color: Transparent White
Streak Color (can vary from surface color, this is the color of the crystals’ powdered minerals): White
Group: Silicates
Cleavage (where the crystal breaks off naturally to form a new face, parallel to its structure. This is a clean break and can cleave over and over again along the same face, retaining the crystals structure): None
Fracture: Conchoidal (clam-like, the way glass breaks)
Luster: Vitreous (glass-like) to Greasy
Tenacity: Very Brittle (little resistance to breakage)
Transparency: Transparent (light goes through without obstacles) to Translucent (allows light through the crystal but not fully transparent)
Crystal System: Trigonal (prism with 6 sides and 6 edges meeting at a sharp point).
Crystal Habit: Crystals or Massive (lump)
Can you wear Quartz jewelry every day?
Polished Quartz can be worn in jewelry every day. It is durable and powerful. If your jewelry features raw Quartz, wear it with care. It is more prone to flaking and chipping.
Quartz is a very popular stone found in crystal healing jewelry. Smooth Quartz beads make great bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. Natural Quartz points and clusters make brilliant and powerful healing pendants.
Where should I put Quartz in my home?
In the home, Quartz can be kept anywhere you need to activate fresh energy. Whether you want a lively social life in the living room, enhanced love life in the bedroom, or a burst of motivation in the home office, Quartz will do the job.
For Feng Shui energy, place Quartz in your "Health" area right in the middle of your room or house. For more on placing crystals, visit How to Clear & Fill the Home with Crystals.
What is the difference between Rutilated and Tourmalinated quartz?
Although they look similar, Rutilated and Tourmalinated Quartz are different. They both have needle-like inclusions encapsulated in Clear Quartz. However, Rutilated Quartz is encased with Rutile, a Titanium Dioxide mineral with a gold or red color while Tourmalinated Quartz is encased with Tourmaline, a black mineral.
How can you tell if you have real Rutilated Quartz?
In addition to the tips above on how to tell if your Clear Quartz is real, here are tips on how to tell if your Rutilated Quartz or Tourmalinated Quartz is real:
-
The needle-like inclusions will be random in size, shape, thickness, and arrangement. If your inclusions are uniform, it is most likely a fake.
-
The needle-like inclusions will have jagged ends. If it is too square at the ends, it is most likely a fake.
-
Your Rutilated Quartz should be gold, red, or brown and your Tourmaline Quartz should be black. Rutile may show a tint of other colors like greenish or bluish-gray, but if you have wildly vivid or neon colors, they are most likely fakes.
Is Blue Rutile Quartz natural?
Blue Rutile Quartz is natural but rare. Rutile is usually found in gold, red, or brown tones. However, there is a bluish-gray variety. Your Blue Quartz may also be an inclusion of Indicolite, a rare blue Tourmaline.
Is Titanium Quartz natural?
Titanium Quartz is a natural crystal, but it is synthetically coated with metals to give it a metallic rainbow sheen. So, yes, the Quartz itself is natural, but the process it undergoes to achieve its color is not.
What is the difference beteen Quartz and Calcite?
Both stones are very common and are usually found in a white color, but it is easy to tell the difference between Quartz and Calcite because Calcite is much softer than Quartz. Calcite is a relatively soft stone with a 2.5-3 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, easily scratched by a knife or metal nail. It will not scratch Quartz which is a 7 in hardness nor any other harder stone.
Quartz forms in long hexagonal shapes or six sided point. Calcite forms in blocky rhombohedral shapes. If you forgot your geometry class, this is a parallelogram shape where the adjacent sides are uneven in length, like a tilted cube.
You can also test your stones chemically. Calcite is highly reactive even to weak acids like plain white vinegar. It will start to bubble like carbonated water. Quartz will not react to acid.
What is the difference between Quartz and Quartzite?
Quartz and Quartzite are both natural stones, despite what you find when you search for countertops. Quartz is the crystal we habe been discussing in this article and Quartzite is made up of lots of different Quartz crystals.
Quartize starts off as Sandstone, which is composed mostly of Quartz grains. When Sandstone gets buried it encounters high heat and pressure. The grains fuse together to form Quartzite.
Quartzite is usually white, but can come in a variety of colors depending on what other minerals were present in the formation. Quartzite is not as grainy as Sandstone, but it is not as smooth and translucent as Chalcedony.
