What is Fluorite?

Fluorite is a clear, semi-precious gemstone that gets its colors from mineral inclusions and irradiation. It is known as one of the most colorful minerals in the world found in green, purple, blue, yellow, clear, and more rarely black, pink, white, brown, and red.

The name Fluorite comes from the Latin word fluere meaning "to flow" because Fluorite makes a great flux for iron and steel making.

Sheila's personal experience with Fluorite

My friend texted me the other day asking me what she should do if the opposing candidate won the presidential election. This was obviously before the election results, but I had the same advice for her then as I do now: stay focused on the positive.

Sometimes it's hard for us to stay on track in our chaotic minds, which is why I like to use a physical reminder by implementing healing crystals for the task.

Why not stay focused with Fluorite? Fluorite is a translucent stone most often found in bands of purple, green and yellow but can show up in deep blues, whites, and browns. It is polished into all kinds of shapes for crystal healing.

For focus at work, I tell people to place a Fluorite pyramid on their desks.

For a focus on studies, I recommend a Fluorite tower near your books.

For a focus on confidence, I suggest Fluorite worry stone slabs which can be used in stressful times in the palm of your hands.

Fluorite's focused energies really hit home with me once I got into archery. I have never had an interest in a game of concentration before, but somehow this sport got me! Focus really allows me to excel in the shooting range.

Some people like to focus their energies on meditation, balance poses, or the injustices of the world. I like to focus my energy on the bulls-eye. Dropping the chatter from my head and allowing me to be centered and in line with Fluorite's energies, I tell as soon as I let go of my arrow if my mind has wandered too far from the center.

Lisa's personal experience with Fluorite

I have recommended many a scatter-brain to use Fluorite on their desks to help focus on their tasks at hand. Luckily, I don't have this problem and am able to focus once I break into work mode. Nevertheless, I am drawn to the translucent rainbow colors of Fluorite, especially the darker ones like the striped purple Fluorite heart as pictured above!

For me, holding Fluorite is like an electrical charge of alignment, readying my thoughts to point in the same direction.

Wearing Rainbow Fluorite jewelry adds that much-needed array of shiny colors to my wardrobe. Do you need some color in your life?

How do you care for Fluorite?

Fluorite is a very soft stone. Only a 4 out of 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. Fluorite should always be handled with great care because of its fragility. It easily breaks, chips, and scratches.

Fluorite is not a crystal that should be cleaned in water. A quick rinse or spot cleaning with a damp cloth should be okay, but to be safe, use a dry cloth or duster. Do not soak your Fluorite in water as it will become more brittle. Use the indirect method when making a Fluorite gem elixir

If you are looking to metaphysically cleanse, charge, and program crystals, visit our Crystal Care guide.

Does Fluorite break and scratch easily?

Yes, Fluorite breaks and scratches easily. It is one of the easiest stones to damage because it is soft and brittle. Fluorite also has a lot of internal fracture points, especially where the color changes within the stone. These weak structural points are susceptible to breakage.

It is normal to see dings and chips on polished Fluorite crystals and jewelry.

Is Fluorite safe?

Fluorite crystals that we use in healing and decor are safe. The strong bonds of Fluorite and Calcium ions are stable.

However, if you heat your Fluorite crystal or treat it with chemicals,  it can become dangerous. Read more about the Fluorine Martyrs in Fascinating Fluorite.

Magical Fluorite Incantation

This is a message from Fluorite from Doreen Virtue and Judith Lukomski's book "Crystal Therapy":

"Standing in unity, we present ourselves to assist in your process of authentication. We carry gentle combinations of potent healing abilities that trigger meditative states, peeling back layers of personality and preparing  you for vision quests to meet your authentic self. We're frequently called upon during contemplation to initiate meetings with ascended masters and guides. Yet, we also provide clear thinking to keep day-to-day activities focused and moving smoothly, and we serve as personal trainers in healing to individuals interested in the art and practice of crystal therapy."

Where should I put Fluorite in my home?

In the home, Fluorite can be kept in any room where you want to calm the energy. If your living room gets a lot of chaos and energy from your family, place Fluorite there. If it's the bedroom that has been a source of tension and bickering, place Fluorite there.

Is Fluorite good for jewelry?

Fluorite is not an ideal stone for jewelry because it scratches and breaks easily. However, you will find Fluorite in all kinds of jewelry formations. Because it is such an attractive gemstone, it can be found polished into rings, earrings, beaded necklaces, bracelets, and pendants.

As long as you are aware that it is a sensitive stone, you can wear it with care for many years to come.

Can I wear Fluorite every day?

You can wear Fluorite every day as long as you are aware that it will scratch easily. If your Fluorite is polished it could also lose its gloss with everyday wear.

Your daily activities will determine if Fluorite is an everyday crystal for you. For example, if you are active with your hands, you may want to avoid a Fluorite bracelet or ring. If you like to exercise, you may want to avoid a Fluorite necklace or bracelet that is contacting the sweat on your skin.

How can you tell fake Fluorite?

Luckily there is not much fake Fluorite on the market. Fluorite is pretty abundant and relatively affordable compared to other gemstones.

The best way to determine if your Fluorite is real is to find a reputable seller who knows what they are selling you. If you do not have access to a reputable seller, here are some tips to follow to tell if your Fluorite is real:

  • Real Fluorite is a 4 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. It is easily scratched by glass but will not be scratched by Calcite.

  • Real Fluorite glows under ultraviolet light where other materials like glass may not.

  • Real Fluorite will have inclusions, but never air bubbles like glass.

  • Real Fluorite should feel heavier than plastic or glass.

  • Real Fluorite should command a higher price than a fake.

What is oiled Fluorite?

Oiled Fluorite refers to Fluorite that has been treated with oil. The oil fills in the cracks and crevices on the stone, making it more lustrous and appealing to the buyer.

Oiling of gemstones is done to enhance many gemstones like Emerald Quartz, and Tourmaline.

What is Fluorite used for in everyday life?

Besides crystal healing and adornment, Fluorite is used in everyday life in steel manufacturing, ceramic processes, and chemical industries. It is one of the essential non-metallic minerals used in industrial work today.

Roman miners found Fluorite in silver and lead ores and noticed that it reduced the melting temperatures during smelting (the process of extracting metal from its ores through heat and melting). It also combined itself with impurities durng the process so that they could remove the unwanted stuff all in one easy lump.

Fluorite is called Fluorspar when it is processed and sold as a bulk material for everyday use. Seven million metric tons are mined every year and converted to hydrofluoric acid or used to smelt steel and aluminum.

Natural high-quality Fluorite crystals were once used to make lenses. Today Fluorite is melted and combined with other materials to produce synthetic lenses for microscopes, telescopes, and cameras.

Where is Fluorite found?

Fluorite is found worldwide including in China, Mexico, the USA, South Africa, Mongolia, Russia, Brazil, and Spain.

Is Fluoride the same as Fluorite?

Fluoride and Fluorite are not the same things. However, Fluorite does contain Fluoride (along with Calcium), so you can extract Fluoride from Fluorite. Fluorite can not exist without Fluoride, but Fluoride can exist without Fluorite. In other words, Fluoride is an ingredient found in your Fluorite just like it is in your toothpaste.

Calcium Fluoride is an abundant, naturally occurring mineral found in all natural waters. Sodium Fluoride is extracted in a laboratory and processed for your common products like mouthwash and toothpaste.

Is Fluorine the same as Fluorite?

Fluorine is the gaseous form of Fluoride and Fluorite is the crystal form of Fluorine. Fluorine is an element that is very eager to bond with other chemicals, which makes it useful in many industries.

Does Fluorite have Amethyst in it?

Fluorite does not have Amethyst in it. The purple variety of Fluorite can be confused for Amethyst. However, an easy scratch test will determine that Fluorite at a 4 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness is much softer than Amethyst at a 7. Amethyst will easily scratch Fluorite.

If you have raw Fluorite and Amethyst, your Fluorite may be cubed whereas your Amethyst may be a hexagonal point. You will never find a cubed Amethyst nor a Fluorite in a crystal point.

If you have a cubed stone, it will be Fluorite. Calcite does not grow in cubic formation.

What is Blue John?

Blue John, also called Derbyshire Spar and Derbyshire Blue John, is a rare Fluorite with bands of purple-blue and creamy yellow colors. It is only found in Derbyshire, UK, and is one of the pricier Fluorites.

What is Yttrium Fluorite?

Yttrium Fluorite, also called Yttrofluorite, is a combination of Yttrium and Fluorite minerals growing together. Yttrium replaces some of the Calcium Ions found in Fluorite to form this stone. It is usually found in a creamy lavender color but can also be reddish-brown or gray.

This stone does not form in crystal cubes like Fluorite. It is found in masses and grains and is usually from Mexico. It has a Mohs Scale of Hardness of 4 like Fluorite.
